FAQs
What is a biocide?
The European Biocidal Products Regulation [BPR] defines a biocidal product as follows:

“- any substance or mixture, in the form in which it is supplied to the user, consisting of, containing or generating one or more active substances, with the intention of destroying, deterring, rendering harmless, preventing the action of, or otherwise exerting a controlling effect on, any harmful organism by any means other than mere physical or mechanical action,

- any substance or mixture, generated from substances or mixtures which do not themselves fall under the first indent, to be used with the intention of destroying, deterring, rendering harmless, preventing the action of, or otherwise exerting a controlling effect on, any harmful organism by any means other than mere physical or mechanical action.”

What are the different types of biocides?
There are 22 'product types' under the BPR, split into 4 main groups:

Main group 1: Disinfectants

Main group 2: Preservatives

Main group 3: Pest control

Main group 4: Other biocidal products

How do i register my biocidal product?
Requirements vary by country.

Some countries may need you to seek a product 'authorisation', while others may require a simple 'notification'.

Product registrations are managed by a national 'competent authority', which is often part of the country's health or agricultural ministry.

Outside of Europe, biocidal products may be referred to as 'pesticides'.

What data will I need to register my biocidal product?
Data requirements will depend on the type of product and the type of authorisation being sought.

Generally speaking, you could expect to require efficacy data, chemistry data and an assessment of human health and environmental impact.
